If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”

Whats your range ?

Ok politics have pretty much taken over our lives for last couple months.I have been pretty much checking out my area of operations. And here in my part of Indiana for the most part,500 yds will be very long range.Unless perhaps you had a target on the interstate then you may have a very long shot.

So in reality I probably don't need a 1200 yd whopper stopper, and my limited prepping funds could be used better else where.

Here in perhaps 1 month I will be able to get away from work and check out my newest hardware. One of my newest purchases may turn out to be a good long range shooter anyway.

So those of you prepping on a budget you may want to really see what your needs are.Fill in your priorities first, then come back to the wants.

  1. Dependent upon where I am when the SHTF I found the ranges being 7 yards to a 1000 yards. Locally where I am now an SKS is practical but where my bugout location is, 1000 yards is about the max(way past SKS range). I went with a PSL and made an aperture sight for it for speed reasons. It has the reliability of the AK receiver setup, Cheap ammo that isn't that hard to find, and the longer range capability as needed. Hard hitting but not a shoulder killer either.(that recoil spring does wonders)

Side arm is the 1911. wouldn't have it any other way.

Wants: AR in .308 with a gas piston setup. Not anytime soon. The PSL works well for me till then.

  3. reliable like an AK with the accuracy of an AR (unmodified) and the hard hitting round from the Mosin. Interesting scope that has great optics, but I prefer peepsites.(made one to fit the receiver cover for mine)

    I like it.

Make sure of your backstop though. Was shooting into a strip mine near my dads place and the rounds were shattering stones at 400 yards. The cheap rounds I have been finding are steelcore. 2 or 3 rounds will punch clean through a large sandstone boulder.(car tire size)

  4. Right on.That was one reason I wanted it was all the surplus ammo.Another was the reliability of Ak.Until I shoot it not sure on accuracy.Yeah not at all familiar with eastern bloc optics. Thanks for the input.

  5. Ahhh, yes- nicer weather is making getting outside much more enjoyable for longer periods, so getting exercise is lots more fun.
Today we- Muttley and I- took a tour of one area uphill and down. I kept the "range" in mind and made guesstimates even from high hillsides (of course we won't be on TOP the hill when shooting, but at the "military crest") of ranges and fields of fire. Not much beyond 500 yards, most much less than that. At least, along the lines of vehicle travel. Grunts will be going through areas with much less distance. Of course, they can't see you and you can't see them, so shooting won't be a "go".
My arsenal has a 30-06, but it's more for desire than need or practicality. For this area, the 30-30 would be more than adequate. And ammo is most likely available under every bush you come across. I've been finding a lot of SKS and AK ammo in the shooting areas, too. So lots of people are thinking similar thoughts.
