If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”

REcomendations.

Send it things it there may be too many variables to outfit for.So for those who have no idea,I will give a few general ideas.OK lets say you just found out the enemy is at the gate and you've got a minute to get ready. I have Bugout bag loaded if I'm to flee from home.If the gate is far enough away that I can meet or head them off away from my home, I would grab my vest which holds 8 mags for mini-14 1 in gun, side arm ,several mags for it on vest also, knife of your choice mine are old camillus, and or cold steel SRK,small pack extra clothes depending on season if warm probally extra socks only, several bags of ramen noodles,lg bag beef jerky,2canteens,small tarp, rope or para cord,at least two fire making devices mine are mag rod and bic lighters. If I could afford it best body armor I could afford and kevlar helmet.I would sling Ak or mini and carry my most accurate long range gun and 30 to sixty rounds in pack for it,as sniper weapon I dont see putting as many rounds out as in a firefight with assult rifle but I am not a soldier. My bugout pack is lg alice,sm pack is lg bookbag type. Also 1 roll t-p no leaves on ass.Recomendations or thoughts?

  1. HAHAHA ........... "no leaves on ass" Oh man, THAT got a good belly roll going hahaha.......

Well, sounds like you have your shit wired tight China ! Large A.L.I.C.E. is not my choice but, that's only because it's so fucking heavy lol .

I use a medium ALICE or Medium M.O.L.L.E. ruck and a "RECON PACK" which is sort of like a fanny pack with more room and it looks cooler. I carry in my main ruck, 1 shirt, 1 trouser , 1 boxer short and 1 pair socks. I fold and roll the clothes to give more room. I use an assault vest by BLACK HAWK which allows me to carry 6 x 30rd mags for mini14 or AK47, it has a built in sidearm holster with 2 mag pouches for sidearm , along with 1 x 30rd mag in the rifle. Equalling 210 rounds assault ammo, and 36 rds for sidearm. Any more then that and it limits movement due to weight .

Also in the ruck I keep a map, flashlight with red and clear lens , 2 HDR rations (humanitarian daily ration), 2 large tootsie rolls (ya I know but I love em) Field bath kit w/toothbrush,swedish FIRESTEEL+striker,NVG's, a smallcook kit for backpackers,1 spool trip wire, 1 multi tool,T.P. and some light sticks with snap traps.

In my Recon pack , I keep a first aid kit, bug juice, hurricane matches, compass & GPS,a toologic magic card toolkit, moleskin (for feet),spare rifle/pistol parts (firing pins, springs, extractor). I also carry a small multiband radio for hoping to tap into enemy chatter. As always , 2 1quart canteens filled and polar pure for questionable water.

All of this seems like a bunch of small, insignificant shit but,let me explain.
HDRs pack a BUNCH of nutrition into small packages. Tootsie rolls offer energy boost and have carbs which you will burn off fast while under duress.Field bath kit and toothbrush because after humping your ass off all day long , you will be amazed at the boost it gives your morale to have clean teeth and armpits, crotch etc. Little known fact :CELLULOSIS is a fucked up deal and it appears when you do not maintain hygiene. It can cripple your movement in the field.

I travel light as possible and try to improve my situation as I go by making use of things found while on the move. 1 thing to remember is, you must remain mobile at all times, if you are too heavy from gear, you will peter out quickly and be done for .

A main portion of my gear for rapid deployment is geared toward peace of mind and boosting my personal morale.Being somewhat clean and knowing that I have parts for my weapon that most commonly break, is a huge calming factor.

A lot of my gear is for defense, such as the trip wire and light sticks etc. When you are fried and have got to rest , I make a 360 degree perimeter around my nest. I will climb into the nastiest most god forsaken place to hole up for the night and then improve security on top of that . I have other assorted crap that I carry in my BDU bellows pockets and I wear a trijicon dive watch with an alarm that buzzes. I set it to wake every 2 hours and clear my perimeter. SECURITY IS PARAMOUNT when the bad guys are after you . They have a much better situation then you will in your proposed scenario so, stay secure .

I will get some links to some of the gear I use and leave them here . I may not have the same idea of bugging out as others do but, that does not make my way or others' ways right or wrong . Just do what you feel good and comfortable with but, remember , too much wieght will kill our old asses HAHA . One thing I forgot to mention is , I carry "RANGER WRAPS" which are like small , very durable rubber bands and I use them to secure knives and other items to the vest as well as wrap noisy items in them.

  2. Thanks Brother thats what I was looking for.My lg pack is for extended living from pack for along time deal.My small pack is for short duration recon/sniping role.My equip is changed out updated a lot as newer or better comes a long.newer isn't always better.I am going to do a lot of camping/practice this year, and field testing as much as possible. What are your thoughts on binoculars or monocular, are they worth the weight? My actuall bugout pack contains a lot of food gathering equip, fishing gear, trot lines, snares, rat traps for squirrels, gerber hatchet, hawks,sm bow saw, water filter camo tarp, ultra light tent, just this side of to heavy but I could live from it for a long time and hopefully evade bad guys.As you say different conditions and people call for different equip but this should give someone just starting out some ideas.Just for the record bug dope or spray is great idea people if you have never layed on a chiggers nest you what a joy the cocksuckers are invisable little parsite that sucks your blood, basicly harmless but you will scratch your hide off with the terrible itching they leave.Wives tale says to cover with clear nail polish, but by the time you itch they are gone.We have ticks which do carry diseases, and all sorts of biting sting insects here.So bug dope unscented dont want bad guys to smell you, giving away your location.

  3. Thanks for the info, give me some ideas on re-packing my BoB. Right now I have a CFP-90 (it's huge, just over what the ILBE main pack can take) with the additional patrol pack, and it's meant for the long walk. Right now it's about about 45 pounds but would be more like 65 when I added more food/water. Not moving too fast in that.

My plan right now is to bug out by truck if TSHTF, if I can and for as far as I can. My parents farm is ~1,300 miles, until I can find a job closer. My quadcab 4x4 is high miles but in good shape. The BoB would only be for if I had to abandon the truck.

I don't think I'd be going anywhere fast of foot though b/c I'd have my wife and two toddlers with me. That's why the BoB is so heavy - my 100 lb wife won't be carrying much more than a 40 lb kid, and a pistol.

In the situation above, might be better for me to try to take out whoever is at the gate than to run.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes sir, that may be one option.I think in most estimates the average person can't pack more than around 50 lbs too comfortably. In your case taking young family I would expect more along the lines of evasion rather than confrontation if possible. Ilive 30 miles from most of my family. And I live along Interstate so I would depending on timing most likely be on foot if its martial law, evading untill I hook up with friends and family.Perhaps small fanny pack for mom with wet naps, snacks etc for children?not much weight.Suburban not to tell ya your business, but ya might look in to options in case plan a falls apart have a plan B and c. Maybe check the route to parents any decent places along the way to lay low if caught up in it on way.I feel for your my kids are grown up with kids, thats where I would be headin to defend, support them.Good Luck.

  5. I totally understand about having kids in the mix , now I have Threepers kids with us as well as his wife (who I wouldn't tangle with on a good day). This is the reason for the retreat we have been working up. Bugging out is a huge commitment and in making that commitment , you will have to prepare to lose some of your preps.

If I bug out , it will be a bobwhite (as in quail) maneuver , taking off to draw the threat away from loved ones. I can take care of myself thanks to a shitload of Ranger training and combat but, if I had to carry others with me , it would decrease my survivability massively and theirs as well .

So, I pack light for short term and being who I am , I need much less to get by then many others do. In transit I would be looking to improve my situation at the expense of as many bad guys as possible. If I run low on ammo, I use one of their weapons . If I get hungry or my clothes are tattered, I'll get some from them.

As far as optics are concerned, YES I advocate for them absolutely. Honestly, you can get the job done with cheap optics. Bushnell, Baush & Lomb , Burris , Nikon , man there are a bunch out there . I currently own Gen2 NVG set and am looking to upgrade to Gen 4 or better .I also have an NV scope made by ATN for my Mini 14 ranch rifle.

    http://www.opticsplanet.net/atn-nightvision.html?gclid=CLb1xODPm6ACFSpeagodCH6vQw

I would recommend a high quality set of optics simply for the durability factor . You have to realize that many of the items we are talking about WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE when TSHTF. Right now is a grace period , get the stuff you need while it is available. I recommend NIKON for a mid priced scope , long or short range , they make a simply wonderful set of optics for a great price .

I use SHEPHERD optics. They are expensive but, well worth the expenditure when you need them to perform . Literally ANYTHING you get will be better then nothing at all . On the bug juice matter, I use military jungle juice with a high DEET content. There is notheing worse then being eaten alive by bugs when you are scared, tired and being shot at , trust me.

Yes it burns a little and yes it should be washed off daily but, the bugs go out of their way to stay off of your ass, what more needs said lol. I coat ankles then blouse trouser legs, wrists and button sleeves , neck and a light coat on face and hair, 12 hours bug free guaranteed and the stuff is cheap.

Check out www.majorsurplusandsurvival.com and google military surplus bug juice or jungle juice. You'll find it .

Alright guys, I have to go play with the kids , Dad and uncle drew are in high demand these days .

  7. Here are some links to affordable Night Vision items .
Some of these are short range rifle scopes and then I dug up some inexpensive NV monoculars too from between $250 to $133 . Generation 1+ is older technology but, anything is better then nothing .

    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=bushnell+night+vision+goggles&oe=&cid=13963777813228671430&os=sellers#p ($133)

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/331944-REG/Konus_7923_Konuspy_1_1st_Generation_Night.html ($250)

    http://www.amazon.com/ATN-MK410-Spartan-Maginification-Vision/dp/B001J8PUHK/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1267596283&sr=8-13

In order to get professional grade night vision optics, it will cost you around $3,000.00 for GEN 2&3 and up to but not limited to $6,000.00 to outfit 1 man with GEN 4 or THERMAL($8,000.00)........ Go GEN 1 or GEN 1+ and you'll stay under $500.00.

My first piece of night vision was a STARLIGHT monocular. It was frikin bullet proof and I still have it today . It cost me $650.00 10 years ago. Today you can find stuff on EBAY for 1 to 2 hundred bux . CABELAS has some stuff in clearance at times for really cheap.

If anyone is interested , I will keep my eyes and ear open for such deals. Just wanted to address that real quick, now time to hit the rack .

Good Night all. Say a prayer for 3%'s family, they still aren't sleeping and the kids are hit hard.

  11. Gents,

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I’ve been thinking about this for months and know the best thing to do is just move closer to the retreat, which is my parents 100 acre farm in rural Nebraska. My two brothers and their families both live much closer, in the same state, and are helping with preps there, slowly but surely. Not perfect, but some game, water, plenty of ground to plant, and a small arsenal.

I’ll eventually get my pack to a spot where I could dump the main pack and take the patrol pack with the most important items. But the bobwhite maneuver probably isn’t good for our situation as my wife isn’t that handy with firearms. I guess it would depend on the specific circumstances.

But I do have a series of plans:

Plan A; move closer to the retreat. I’ve been looking for a job closer to the retreat, but not much out there these days for my career field. If I can get to CO Springs, it’ll still be a few hundred miles away, but a relatively flat, easy few hundred, compared to going from the DC area (which sucks).

Plan B; shelter in place for the short term. This one is tricky. If there is just some sort of localized disaster (bad storm, minor terrorist attack, etc.), there is no reason to bug out, we’re well prepared to stay here for months, as long as there is civil order.

Plan C; bug out by vehicle. Load up the truck, possibly take the SUV (backup vehicle) with a tow bar, and head out. I have some gas cans and the SUV tank holds 16 gal more. Just drive straight through in less than 24 hours. I have lots of leave so if things didn’t apart I’d still have a job to come back to.

Plan D; bug out on foot. This would be if the road were shut down or after an EMP attack or something along those lines. It would probably take a year b/c we’d have to winter some place and could maybe travel 8-10 miles a day at best. Probably less than 50% chance of making it. I’m getting one of those jogging strollers with three bicycle wheels, which would be handy for going cross-country in such a situation. I figure we’d have to go by night and stay off roads.

None of my plans include staying in the DC metro area if TSHTF, where survival chances would be close to zero for someone in my situation. A single guy would have a shot, but not a guy with a wife and two kids to look out for.

So I have to plan for all options, and I spend a lot of time on it. If I can’t move before something happens, I’ll have a hare trigger on Plan C (bug out by vehicle) to get ahead of the masses.

Over the past year I’ve been buying things here and there. I still need a night vision device (thanks for the links, I’ll be going over them), and maybe a handheld GPS (have a lensatic compass).

The rifle I have here is an SKS, and putting a scope on those is a pain. When the SIG516 comes out later this year I may get that – have been saving for it. Also have a Marlin 60 .22, a CZ75B 9mm, and a Neos .22 (for the wife).

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sounds like you are doing a great job getting it together Suburban ! I completely understand your situation as I too have 2 small children and now , I have 3%'s 2 kids as well as my wife and his ............ I promised him I would include his family should something happen and I WILL NOT let him down .

This is the reason for the retreat we have been working up . Now , I am going to have to make it on my own, both me and 3% were doing this as a team and it's a lot harder without him .

Anyways, SKS doesn't need a scope, just get optic for your personal view and then only shoot what is close enough to hit with iron sights. My bobwhite maneuver would include drawing enemy away from family by running and stop to harass them. Pouring fire onto them will keep them chasing me if I do it in spurts. ADVICE: Help your wife to become handy with a firearm , she can be a huge help in any situation if she can shoot straight.

My wife is a fabulous marksman(markswoman?) She is proficient with a mini 14 out to 450 meters. She can load mags and keep me shooting as well as defend herself . 3%s wife is a beautiful beast . She is the wife of a seasoned sniper and she can snipe !!! So, I am feeling ok about security so far lol.

In my opinion, get as far away from large populations as you can , as soon as possible .You have a much better shot at survival being away from people who are freaking out.

Good Luck all , may we all meet up for the big assault !!!

  15. Thanks man, I am doing the best I can under the circumstances .

I was checking out your list of PDF files and this one caught my eye

"Active air defense. Small arms fire to destroy aircraft."

So, I did a little research on this subject , including calling some old friends in the Army for advice . The response I received was pretty much unanimous "If you don't have stinger missiles it'll be tough BUT, if using small arms fire , use either .50bmg or .338 Lapua Magnum OR Barrett's new .416 cal." 416 cal rifles are around $4,000.00 and up and not for sale to civilians yet.

They told me that today's aircraft are all but impervious to most small arms rounds except these two. Soooo, I placed an order last evening for this rifle :

    http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=30M338&ReturnUrl=Categories.aspx?Category=3a467b6f-2ac9-4e26-82f0-7914a7ffbb4e

And when it shows up , along with the 1,260 rounds for it , I will test it's capabilities and let you know the outcome . YES, This sucker is EXPENSIVE !I paid nearly $2,000.00 for the rifle and $700.00 + for the ammo ............. I still have 3%'s .50 BMG single shot so, should be set up .(He was buried with his custom made Remington model 700 hybrid that had armory stamps from the Corps.) just in case you wondered lol.

I want to test these two rifles side by side for recoil, accuracy and distance . Apparently one could purchase API round for .338 lapua mag. too (360 of the rounds I bought just happen to be API)900 rounds are straight bronze core ball ammo.

I should get this bad boy in in around 3 to 4 days as Armalite is happy to make the sale. I did this sue to the fact that taking out aerial invaders may be a really big deal . No , I could not afford this rifle but, I won't be able to acquire it after TSHTF so, I justified it under those circumstances.

I'll let you all know how it is when I get it .

  16. Um, I just got a call from credit card company asking if I bought $1,100.00 worth of ammunition.............. Ya they call whenever something sounds strange lol.

Sooo, I was under the impression that my ammo cost a lot less but, I bought it anyways. YIKES , ANOTHER EXPENSIVE RIFLE TO SHOOT !!!!!! Good Lord .

Reloading dies are gonna have to wait lol .

Good thing is, I will be back to work next week so, I can make up some of the cash I busted out for this thing , holy shit !!!

  17. Oh damn.Yes I'm not sure when that manual was published, but they mention Nam and the sandbox as time goes on they are steadily improving armor capability.THATS very cool on .50.I misspoke on which weapon you buried him with.I feel terribly under armed. My largest at this time is the Romania Dragunov knock off 7.62x54r.With steel core ammo should be a real penatrator, but maybe noy heavy enough.wonder if cheaper than dirt carrying AA guns yet.Perhaps SAMS?DAMN IT man! I am not even all the way set up on all my new calibers yet,Thanks R3V.HA Ha better to know than when it counts Huh?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yep brother , it is good to have friends in low places hahaha........... I always love to get a new weapon but, I normally keep my expenditures under $1,000.00 so that I can easily pay off the card balance .

I used to carry a budget for preps, only a certain amount allowed per month . As things progress though, I have chucked the prepping budget and I just get what I think I'll need when I find it . This is one of those things . Not that I will EVER be shooting at aircraft , you have to have NO OTHER OPTION to start shooting at something that flies man. I just need to know that if I HAVE TO , I can and may have some success .

The only other rifle out there that is recommended is the new Barrett .416 caliber .Dude, they are NOT available to the public yet and if they were , they are around $5 grand . So fuck that ! Anyways bro, my FFL dealer has this on order, he called and told me it may bee a bit before I get it due to high demand but, we'll see .

It's paid for and so it'll arrive someday soon lol .
