If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”

Some thoughts on rifle calibers.

Most of ya are gun guys.So you know battle rifles were full size cartridges along the lines of 30-06.At the beginning of the Vietnam war the US and other Countries down sized to 5.56 and similar like 5,45x 39. No not to piss off all of ya who love your AR's but we basically went from a big game round to a varmint round. If you had a 200 lb guy coming at you would you want a deer or bear sized round or a varmint round designed for groundhogs?

I do shoot a Mini-14 so yeah I have a groundhog gun too.Main reason is because I can get green tips fairly reasonable.

They have little tiny steel rod in core.Better yet surplus 7.62x54r they have it too with a lot more bullet weight and powder behind it and its still reasonable for now. If .223/5.56 is all ya can afford thats one thing but a lot of guys think just be cause the military used it its the best, often times true but not always. What I don't get is the guys who spend a boatload of money on their AR platform but not upgrading caliber?

There are some wicked rounds available for AR platform like 6.8 grendel,308,etc I am a puss don't think I would want to shoot huge caliber out of that light a weapon. But intermediate to lg would be awesome weapon.

Those of us that are funds limited have to do the best we can with what we can.Again not slamming anybody's favorite guns just that I hear people talking about 500-600 yards with AR in .223. I have my mini for close range house to house type city action. If you consider your AR 600 yard gun try it before taking the gun store experts advice.

Several reports coming out of the sandbox has US troopers wanting stronger round. You see one of the news media's favorite photos is US troop with m-21.There are many weapons on AR platform shooting 308 on up rounds.

Just sayin if you have the money to play there is some cool stuff out there.

I bought this my second Mini during the height of buying frenzy,I really wanted the Mini 30 or 6.8 but at the time magazines for those two were impossible to find or if found they were 5 round mags.

Thoughts?

  1. .223 a groundhog cartridge ? Well , I have to say I disagree but , that's what makes the world go 'round lol. I do prefer, as I have said before, .30 cal BUT, many modern snipers are using .223 cal. as the range has become much closer .

.22 cal rounds do have their drawbacks , range and penetration through webgear and armor as well as vegetation etc. STILL, .223 has killed many men in combat and will continue to do so for the life of the round . I still say that it is much easier to dump out a high rate of fire with .223 while establishing fire superiority then it would be with a .30 cal.

I do prefer a .30 cal if my life depends on it but, if I have to consider the carry options, it's way easier to load out with .223 then .30 cal , you can carry 5 times as much ammo which may very well be the difference between life and death .

    I'm just saying lol .

Taking my back ground into consideration , I will take a .30 cal rifle over any other size round. Yes the .50 BMG is a son of a bitch but, the cartridges weigh a half pound each and you just cannot carry enough alone to get thru a bunch of engagements. .50 CAL is an anti vehicle round and the .338 lapua magnum does this almost as well as the .50 bmg.

I own and LOVE a DESERT TACTICAL SRS (STEALTH RECON SCOUT)
    http://www.deserttacticalarms.com/srs-338-lm-conversion-kit.

This allows me to carry and fire both .308 and .338 from the same weapon. Still though, I will need spotter with semi or full auto capability for security purposes, preferably something in .223 .

Like it or not, the .223 is a light weight , easily transportable battle round that effectively kills humans. You can carry 200 rounds on your person and in your gear which allows for you to become one formidable son of a bitch .

  2. I shoot one and will continue to do so for its purpose.I just worry about all the people who are touting them as long range weapons.A guy at a shop was telling my dad this particular AR was accurate at 600 yds!OK what kind of energy does at have at 600 yds? Hell they were using silenced 10-22's in where was it Checnya? With pretty good results.Groundhog comment was because its ballistics are about same as .222 varmint round. Your opinions are always appreciated.A little friendly disagreement is always welcome. I love my mini but not as long range rifle.

  3. Ha I am usually the one defending .223.After seeing the report on the dade county shoot out I had no reservations about .223 the bad guys shot the shit out of FBI agents with a Mini. I worry some dudes are thinking that they are in league with .308 or 06 and they are not!

  4. ...broad statement, but why does everyone think the AR is "high dollar"?... yea, there's plenty of pricey AR type weapons out there, but that's only because idiots will pay it...three of my four AR type weapons were built,by me,from parts,my first was a colt,in 1988,then two bushmasters at the beginning of the AWB(we were building them, and selling them, doubling our money because of the aforementioned idiots-and the whole pre-ban/post-ban thingy)...my AR-10A3 was bought NIB,eagle arms/div of armalite(i needed a reach out and touch ya round for the Y2K thingy...lol)...two are in .223,one in 9mm,and of course the AR-10 is .308...one of my .223s is a SBR...a nine and a .223 in carbine length, and the .308 is a 20"...most recent plans(to build a 6.8 spc fell apart a couple years ago cuz money just aint there)

...three are "bagged" with the grab and go gear...one in the corner is slingable, cuz if i gotta bug out,it's going on my back while i operate the 870s...

...i guess the same post can be said about my gov't models(1911s) "why(?)when ya can pick up a decent sidearm/different caliber for less than half the price"...eternal questions,Brother...eternal questions, for me it's because i've etherealized John Browning and Eugene Stoner as deities since i was a child...every thing else is moot...

  6. ...as an edit(and on topic...lol)the .223 is a 200/400 meter weapon at best...will they "hit" farther out? yes!...will i purposely deploy it at that range or farther? doubtful!...circumstances may dictate differently of course...

  7. ...damn,that was a quick comeback...lol
...follow ups are good w/AR-10,paper never leaves veiw, small adj to bring reticle back on target...10 shots as fast as i can send'em in a softball sized group, double that with BUIS,as with most shooters,it's more accurate than i am...lol,to me,it's "minute of badguy" that matters...lol

  10. Send It,Hey Bro just checked out that bad boy you purchased.Bull pup no less makes for a shorter sniper package,I wouldn't have thought about bull pup sniper rifle, makes since though.Isn't the recoil out of a 12-13 lb rifle pretty severe with 338 Lapua? I see a lot of the dedicated sniper rifles in this cal have awesome muzzle brakes. Also a couple that don't.When you get time, which it doesn't sound like ya have much of,I hope you will repost on city sniping! We all see how snipers now days hide deeper in a room to avoid detection. What about the winter time no windows open,no shot up burned out buildings here, yet away? Camo to match condtions obviously if outside? Will be checking out vid Thanks Bro!
